Dogs die in hot cars

Alert message sent 25/06/2020 11:00:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Good Morning,

As we are coming into Summer, we have been experiencing very hot weather. Too hot for us, let alone dogs.

You may see people taking their dogs out in this warm weather and leaving them in their cars. Did you know that if it is 22 degrees outside it can reach 47 degrees in a car within 60 minutes? This heat will kill dogs.

If you do see a dog left in a vehicle in this warm weather, then please call 999. Police officers are able to gain entry to the vehicle to save life and we will attend these reports. We will also contact RSPCA if we require their assistance.

Some people will have the instinct to break into the car to free the dog, however please be aware that this could be considered as criminal damage and you may have to defend your actions in court. If this does happen, then please record/ take pictures of the dog in the car and any details of witnesses.

I have attached a leaflet from the RSPCA detailing what to do in these situations and how to keep your dog cool in the warm weather.

Keep Safe
