Tax Scam

Alert message sent 17/11/2019 15:59:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Good afternoon,

I am writing to let you know of a scam that has resulted in the victim losing a considerable amount of money. The purpose of this alert is to raise your awareness and to hopefully prevent you or someone you know becoming a victim.

The victim was contact by phone by a male suspect pretending to be from the Police. The victim was told they had been defrauding the tax man from 1967 to 2017 and a warrant was out for their arrest. To avoid Police turning up at their door to arrest them, they were told to pay approx. £3,000. When they explained they didn't have that kind of money at home, they were instructed to go to the bank and withdraw all the money in cash. They then were asked to put the money in an envelope and send it to an address provided by the suspect by next day delivery. They were contacted again two days later and asked to send more money as they made a mistake with the amount. At this point the victim contacted Police to report it.

Please remember Police will never ask for money, bank details etc over the phone. If you receive a call like this, please hang up immediately. You can contact your phone provider for advice on blocking numbers.
