I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Theft - (shoplifting, personal, other), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. A 41-year-old man has been jailed for 20 weeks after admitting to stealing from two stores in New Milton and Barton-on-Sea.
Daniel Whiteside, of Marryat Road, New Milton was sentenced when he appeared at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Friday (24 April).
In addition to the time he will now spend behind bars, he was also ordered to pay a £154 surcharge and £85 in costs.
The sentence handed down follows two shopliftings from Co-op, Sea Road, Barton-on-Sea on Sunday 22 March and Thursday 26 March and another from Tesco, Caird Avenue on Friday 27 March.
Speaking after sentencing, Sergeant Mark Atrill, of New Milton Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I’m pleased for the stores in question, as well as the wider business community here, that Whiteside has been held accountable for his actions.
"Retail crime remains one of our local priorities, in addition to all the other work that the team is dealing with on a daily basis.
“This case should once again demonstrate our commitment to seriously tackling shoplifting across the New Forest.”
Directly addressing the shops in question, Sergeant Atrill, said: “I want to place on record my huge thanks to the business concerned in this case for their support throughout, helping to achieve this outcome at court.
“I hope this case again sends out a very clear message to others thinking of committing criminality in New Milton and beyond. We won’t tolerate it and we will work tirelessly to bring you before the courts, where you will face justice.”
