I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Theft - (shoplifting, personal, other), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. A 27-year-old man from Ringwood has been jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to five shopliftings from shops in the town.
Quincy Rufus Digby Hopkins, of no fixed abode, was sentenced when he appeared at Poole Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 28 January.
At a previous court hearing, Hopkins had also pleaded guilty to five breaches of his Criminal Behaviour Order. He was in breach of the order by entering the stores from where he stole.
During four separate thefts from Tesco Express on Butlers Lane, Hopkins stole £1,150 worth of items.
During a further theft from Windmill Service Station, Salisbury Road, Hopkins stole £330 worth of items.
As well as the time he will spend behind bars, he must also pay £1,480 in compensation to the shops in question.
Speaking after sentencing, Sergeant Chris Pell, of Ringwood Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Hopkins is a prolific thief and I am really pleased for the stores in question, as well as our wider business community here, that he has been placed behind bars, where he must now face up to the consequences of his offending.
“Hopkins has continued to show a complete disregard for the law and the conditions of his Criminal Behaviour Order, repeatedly stealing from shops in Ringwood.
“I am happy that he is now locked away and not able to commit further criminality or cause any further problems for our local businesses.
“This outcome should serve as a very clear reminder and message to other thieves that we will not tolerate such offending in our area.
“We will continue to relentlessly pursue those wishing to commit crime in Ringwood and will continue to work tirelessly to bring them before the courts.”
Directly addressing the affected businesses in this case, Sergeant Pell, said: “I’d like to place on record my huge thanks to the stores in question for their support throughout our investigation.
“They have shown tremendous determination to see Hopkins held accountable for his actions, and their committed efforts have ensured we achieved this conviction.”
