Report of a dog bite, Portsmouth Road, Horndean on Wednesday 9th July

Afternoon all,

Just wanted to alert you to an incident that occurred on Wednesday 9th July at around 12:15pm. A member of public was sat at a bus stop on Portsmouth Road, Horndean near to Napier Hall when a white female in her 20’s, described as tall, slim, black hair and wearing a light coloured patterned coat walked passed with a Staffordshire bull terrier type dog, brown in colour. The female approached our victim and started talking. As she did her dog jumped up and bit our aggrieved on the hand resulting in a puncture wound and quite a nasty bruise resulting in our victim seeking medical attention. At the time our victim described the female as quite apologetic, that being said no contact details were provided. This is an appeal to anybody who may have witnessed the incident to try and assist police with identifying the dog owner.

The law:

Section 3 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 creates offences relating to a dog being dangerously out of control.
3(1) If a dog is dangerously out of control in any place in England or Wales (whether or not a public place) -
(a) the owner; and
(b) if different, the person for the time being in charge of the dog,
is guilty of an offence, or, if the dog while so out of control injures any person or assistance dog, an aggravated offence, under this subsection.

Police will always take a proportionate response when dealing with any dog bites, and will always look to educate dog owners on their responsibilities first. Nobody wants to see their family companion taken away! With the recent spell of hot weather, like people dogs can get a little grumpier, so please take extra precautions when walking your dog in public.
