Ninja Sword Surrender and Compensation Scheme Launches

A national surrender and compensation scheme has launched to give people the opportunity to hand over any ninja swords in their possession before the ban is implemented.

From tomorrow and throughout July, we will be supporting the Home Office scheme until the ban comes into place on August 1, 2025, when it will become illegal to own, buy, manufacture or import ninja swords.

Not sure if your weapon qualifies as a ninja sword? These are blades between 14-24 inches long with a single straight cutting edge and distinctive tanto-style point.

The scheme enables you to claim compensation if you are eligible and you must surrender the sword at a designated police station. A claim form must be downloaded and filled out, to be handed over to the police at one of the front counters when surrendering the sword.

People handing in these weapons can apply for £5 compensation or greater amounts if they can prove the weapon’s worth.

Follow the Home Office guidance to ensure you’re surrendering any ninja swords correctly.

From August 1, 2025, anyone found in possession of a ninja sword fitting the criteria, even in a private address, could face up to six months in prison, potentially increasing to two years under Government plans.

Visit our webpage to find the closest designated police station to you.

For anyone wishing to dispose of any other weapons, they must do so at one of our surrender bins. You won’t receive compensation for these items as they are not part of the surrender scheme.
