3 x Purse Thefts this month Do you shop in TESCO and SAINSBURYS This can happen anywhere

Alert message sent 24/05/2019 14:38:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Dear  Citizen

So far this month, we have had 3 purse thefts reported. 1 was in Tesco Bursledon and the other 2 were in Sainsbury’s / M&S Hedge End – but obviously this can happen anywhere. The victims were all female and over 60 years old - BUT THIS CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE.
A highly vulnerable location within any supermarket / store, is the vegetable and fruit aisles – this is where people are much more likely to walk or lean away from their bags to look at produce.
Please spread the word amongst your family, friends and neighbours. Please share this message.

There is a quick and easy way to prevent your purse / wallet or handbag being stolen whilst in a supermarket – USE CLIP LOCK/S

There are a variety of different types of these available, either on chains or cords. And you may already have a clip lock that holds your ‘pound’ trolley token – this can easily be used to lock your bag to the trolley. I recommend you clip lock your purse to your bag AND clip lock your bag to the trolley. You can buy clip lock cords for a few pounds - search online for the words - 'prevent purse theft cord chain strap'.

I did send an alert out a while back, to ask if any business’s or groups would like to sponsor some clip lock cords (with your own branding) – so we can demonstrate these and hand these out to residents to prevent purse and bag thefts, but I did not get any responses. If anyone knows any managers for supermarkets or any businesses, agencies or groups that would like to assist, please ask them to get in touch with me.

Kind Regards, PCSO 12948 Woodcock.
