Social Media App Awareness

Alert message sent 15/05/2019 13:11:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Dear Resident,

Each month, two Social media apps along with the risks associated with them will be highlighted to give users a better understanding of how they can keep themselves safe.

This month, the two apps are SNAPCHAT and ASK.FM, the risks associated with them are as detailed below -

SNAPCHAT is a popular photo sharing app that lets users share their photos for a few seconds before they 'disappear'. But anyone receiving a picture can keep it by taking a screen shot, or new apps have been developed which enable the picture to be retained. The site is criticised for making it easy for children to be stalked or groomed.

On, anonymous users ask other users questions. They can easily hide their identity and say what they like without any consequences. Bullying and abuse on the site has allegedly led to very traumatic experiences amongst youngsters. In some cases, this has resulted in youths taking their own lives.

Needless to say, it is imperative that Parents are aware of the above information and that they keep an eye on what their children are being exposed to when using these apps.

For further information, follow the below link which should take you to the 'Get Safe Online' website.
