Fraud Alert

Alert message sent 27/03/2019 09:34:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

This week, Hampshire Constabulary have received reports of two incidents of Fraud which occurred on Saturday 23rd March 2019 and Tuesday 26th March 2019 respectively in the Lymington area.

On both occasions, the victims received a phone call from someone pretending to be calling from their bank. They were told that their bank cards needed to be replaced due to an issue and were asked to provide their PIN numbers. Unfortunately, the PIN numbers were provided. The victims were then told that a courier would be sent round to collect their current cards.

Within minutes of the calls, a male attended the victims addresses and the cards were handed over. Unfortunately, some of the cards have been used to obtain money.

Please consider the following advice to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of Fraud yourselves -

- NEVER give your credit or debit card details over the phone
- Your bank would NEVER contact you to ask you for your PIN, password or other security information.
- If you receive a call from someone purporting to be calling from the bank, Police or any other agency and you aren't expecting it, make reasonable steps to check that the call is genuine before you disclose any personal details, ask the caller for a reference number, end the call and then call the respective agency. They will tell you if they have a record of the call and if they haven't - it will be fraudulent!

It is worth noting that in these two instances, the victims were elderly. With that in mind, please consider passing this information on to any older relatives who may not be in receipt of this alert as they could be more vulnerable to being targetted.

If you or a relative receive a call under these circumstances, please contact Police on 101 immediately.
