Purse Theft

Alert message sent 25/01/2019 11:49:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

For your information, handbag/purse thieves are operating in Farnborough Town centre.  On 22nd January, an elderly lady mis-placed her bag.  It was subsequently stolen and following his, credit cards within the bag were used to make fraudulent withdrawals from a cash point.

Please be advised to keep your bags close to your person at all times.  Do not put them down anywhere or hang them onto trolley's etc were they can be easily stolen.

It is not known how the criminals were able to obtain the PIN number to make the withdrawal.  The victim on this occasion also had her driving licence in her bag.  Given that the elderly are likely to choose PIN numbers that they can easily remember, it may be that this victim was using her date of birth as her PIN number and the criminals have been able to successfully guess the PIN number from the victim's driving licence.  In light of this, police would urge people to be mindful of this when choosing PIN numbers and would suggest changing it if you are using your date of birth.
