Van owners given crime prevention advice following recent rise in tool theft in Aldershot

Van owners are being urged to remain vigilant and follow crime prevention advice after a recent rise in tool theft in Aldershot.

We know this has been an ongoing issue in the area and we are aware of the affect it is having on the local community.

Please be reassured that enquiries are ongoing into each of these reports as we continue to gather evidence in order to arrest offenders.

The recent reports have taken place in various parts of Aldershot, including Wellington Avenue, Cambridge Road, Waterloo Road, St Michael’s Road and Boxalls Lane.

On some occasions, thieves have drilled through locks to gain entry to vans before stealing power tools and other work tools from inside.

We are investigating these reports and following solid lines of enquiry to locate those responsible.

Vans are often targeted by thieves for the tools stored inside. If you have to leave tools in a van overnight, it is a good idea to mark them clearly with your name / company name and address. Items that are clearly marked are less desirable and more difficult to sell on.

We would like to remind van owners of the following advice. Please share this with professional groups and contacts you may have, especially if you are self-employed tradespeople in the areas affected:

  • Please remain vigilant, ensure all doors are locked and windows are shut.
  • If possible, remove your tools from your vehicle and store securely overnight.
  • Mark the tools clearly with your name/company name and address using paint pens and seal with a clear lacquer spay. Other property marking systems are available.
  • Use a lockable cabinet within your van to store the tools.
  • Use a small camera designed to record within vehicles.
  • Take photographs of items of value, making a note of the serial numbers and registering them online at a property register site.
  • Further information and advice on how to keep your vehicle secure can be found on our website: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/keeping-vehicles-safe/vehicle-safe-and-sound/

If you witness any suspicious behaviour, or if you have been a victim, please contact police on 101 or on our website: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/
