Man, 41, jailed for a year after shoplifting in Aldershot

A man has been jailed for a year after breaching his criminal behaviour order and stealing alcohol worth more than £900 from Tesco in Aldershot.

Richard Burns, 41, of Alpine Court, Basingstoke, was charged with four counts of theft from a shop and breaching a criminal behaviour order.

He appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates Court yesterday (18 April) and was jailed for a total of one year.

The court heard he stole alcohol worth more than £900 from the Tesco store on Wellington Avenue between 10 April and 13 April.

He was also in breach of a criminal behaviour order (CBO) which banned him from entering the store. The order was imposed by the same court on 25 January.

CBOs, which have replaced ASBOs, are imposed by a court and can restrict where you go, who you associate with, and what activities you are allowed to take part in.

Breaching the order is a criminal offence, which can lead to a prison sentence.

Police Sergeant Rob Tiller, from the Aldershot Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Richard Burns is a prolific shoplifter who brazenly targeted the same store over a number of days.

“His actions have impacted our local businesses, shop workers and the wider community.

“We take reports of this crime extremely seriously and we will do all we can to put offenders before the courts.

“Our message is clear – shoplifting and this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated in Aldershot and the wider area.”
